Justin Hawkins is bringin’ rock n roll back!
That opening statement is the best way I can describe a Darkness concert because The Darkness are a 70’s influenced riff rock band who’s charismatic front man strutted around the Rams Head Live stage sporting a striped unitard, tatt’s, twin nipple piercings & he hit all the high notes just like on the bands records...that’s the Justin Hawkins Experience!
Hell or Highwater opened the show & they featured Atreyu’s Brandon Saller on drums yet the stars of Hell or Highwater are clearly the 2 perplexing guitarists who’s playing styles compliment each other in a way that you have to experience to understand. Throughout most of the bands set the 2 guitarists use opposing tones that create a thick wall of hard rock fury & the guitar solo’s are really good!
The interesting thing about Hell or Highwater’s set was that they started out kinda so/so....the band didn’t really strike me as anything special at first but as the bands set carried on they seemed to get better & better and the band impressed me on a musical level because they are a good hard rock band with catchy hooks, good choruses & solid writing.
The Darkness were the nights star attraction and they had a minimal stage set up with the large “Darkness” logo being the only onstage prop....The Darkness relied prominently on Justin Hawkins onstage energy, musicianship & his occasional hand stands/ upside down leg splits that made him look like a gymnast at times!
I was actually impressed that the crowd in attendance was quite large & most people in the crowd knew every word to every song...I’ll admit that I only knew the bands “hits” so it was interesting to see these average looking yuppy guys singing along to the band because a large chunk of the bands fanbase on this night did not look like rock music fans at all!
What really impressed me about both The Darkness & Hell or Highwater was that both bands had amazingly clean guitar tones that sounded sweet to the ear...you could hear every note, every solo, every lick and more times than not you don’t usually hear rock shows so clear!
“I Believe in a Thing Called Love” was the closer of the first set & The Darkness finished the show with a 3 song encore which ended with an epic audience approval when Justin roamed through the crowd while on brother Dan Hawkins neck!
If you look closely at Justin’s knuckles he has a tattoo of Freddie Mercury’s face!
If you get a chance to check out this tour I’d highly advise you to see it because this is a must see rock show!
