KILLENSTEIN / LIZZY BORDEN / SPREAD EAGLE
April 27, 2013
“Spring Stampede 2013” presented by Twisted Nail Productions was an all day metal fest that featured Spread Eagle, Lizzy Borden, Killenstein, Beautifully Demolished, etc., and the show itself started at 3 PM and went till just around 1 AM.
I arrived in time to catch Killenstein’s set and the band is a very theatrical experience that’s a mix of industrial with metal intensity...the band is very dark, angry and probably the scariest thing you’ll ever see onstage because the bands main monster is a scary looking dude who will scare the crap out of small children!
Musically Killenstein sounded great & towards the end of their set they played 2 covers, “Wrathchild” by Iron Maiden & “Electric Funeral” by Black Sabbath. Killenstein were the only band on the bill that gave Lizzy Borden a run for his money because Killenstein’s looks are 100 times more intense than Lizzy’s!
Ghost of War were next and the interesting thing about their set was that they brought up Grim Reaper’s original bassist & they jammed a cover of “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC which featured members from most of the bands singing onstage.
Spread Eagle took the stage next and their set was an hour long with non stop rock from start to finish and what made me laugh about their set was the fact that lead singer Ray West said onstage that he read Rock N Roll Experience’s review of their show and he found it funny that I said he was “vertically challenged”. Towards the end of the set Ray told the crowd that they’d be back in a few months to open for Vain and he told a story of how back in the day Spread Eagle were supposed to open for Vain but in an interview Ray made a comment that his band were not “Glam Fags” and Vain took offense to that & ended up not allowing them to play with them. The 2 bands have since made up but Ray commented that it will be interesting to finally play a show with Vain after all these years!
Beautifully Demolished & Icarus Witch delivered ok sets but I zoned out until Lizzy Borden took the stage.
Lizzy had an add running on Craigslist for this show, he was looking for a female dancer to be part of the show...the gig didn’t pay but the add said the female would get exposure....sadly the band never found a female to be part of the show this night.
The Lizzy Borden show for 2013 was slightly different, the band is down to just one guitarist now, they added a cover of “Rebel Yell” by Billy Idol & the show closed with a cover of “Born to Be Wild” by Steppenwolf. Towards the end of the show Lizzy baptized the crowd in blood and after a certain point he began just tossing handfuls o’ blood into the crowd so that by the end almost everyone in attendance had a little fake blood on them!
All in all Spring Stampede 2013 was a hit, the bands were all good, the crowd was ready to rock and it was a fun night for metal.
