On this night there were quite a few options: It was Mother’s Day, Prince was playing a sold out show a few blocks away, Dweezil Zappa was performing at Rams Head Live, and Marky Ramone with Andrew WK was headlining at Baltimore Soundstage.
I opted to cover the Marky Ramone/Andrew WK “Ramones Tribute” which started at 9 PM with Loud Boys. Typical me, I arrived 10 minutes before Marky and company took the stage. Andrew WK delivers high energy renditions of the Joey Ramone penned classics and in all honesty Andrew sounds much better than Joey ever did.
Marky’s face is a chiseled gratification to all things punk rock; the lines represent the miles and miles of road the Ramones traveled to play for their fans all across the globe.
Set wise almost every Ramones song you would ever want to hear was performed alongside a cover of Motorhead’s “Ramones” & “What a Wonderful Life”.
“Blitzkrieg Bop” was the nights closer and probably the most interesting thing at this show was when it was all over and done. “Party Hard” by Andrew WK was played over the PA and the crowd began moshing as if Andrew was onstage singing the song.....I’ve never seen a crowd start a mosh pit after a show was over!
The sound mix was impressive because everything sounded sharp, loud, and tight. I laughed a little during “Beat Up The Brat” because Marky clearly missed a beat and his timing went off quite noticeably for a moment; I don’t think the crowd caught it but it happened!
