KORN / Suicide Silence

October 9, 2015

The Fillmore

Silver Spring, MD

KORN Set List: Blind, Ball Tongue, Need To, Clown, Divine, Faget, Shoots and Ladders, Predictable, Fake, Lies, Helmet in the Bush, Daddy; ENCORE: Falling Away From Me, Here To Stay, Coming Undone, Did My Time, Freak on a Leash

It’s hard to believe Korn’s debut release came out 20 years ago and that KORN are technically “classic rock” at this point. To celebrate this 20 year milestone KORN decided to play it’s debut release from start to finish and going into this show I had no expectations as far as the bands performance. I was floored with just how passionate the band was with each and every song they performed on this night.

I missed the first band due to rain and heavy traffic but was told that Islander delivered a solid performance. I arrived in time to catch all of Suicide Silence’s set and I was impressed with how well received the bands set was; the crowd devoured every note they shredded onstage!

KORN’s backdrop was their first record’s cover and they opened the show with “Blind”. I didn’t expect the band to perform each song as if they were new songs; I’d assumed that the deep cuts would be fluff and the “singles” would be where the band shined. My assumption was totally wrong because KORN performed every track off the first record with passion, chemistry, and vibe that made each song feel just as fresh as they were 20 years ago!

KORN doesn’t look old onstage; they came off fresh, fun, and vibrant with loads of energy. The lull in the show was “Daddy” because as much as I tried to get into it, the lyrical content for that song just made me feel weird. I made it a point to watch the crowd reaction during “Daddy” and part of the crowd moshed, jumped, and surged while the other part just looked at the stage with an emotionless stare. “Daddy” is a song the band never performed live and after witnessing it finally being performed on this tour I would say it’s time to retire that one from the set.

Head impressed me because between songs he would grab cold bottles of water & hand them to kids who were clearly in need of hydration and he genuinely seemed to care about every fan within reach. After the first set ended Head decided to walk off the stage and shake hands, give out guitar picks, and sign autographs for all of the fans on stage right which is something you rarely see a bigger band do.

Korn played a 5 song encore and I give the band credit for delivering what I’d consider to be one of the best performances I’ve seen in 2015; this show was superb from the first beats of “Blind” to the guitar outro of “Freak on a Leash”. I’ve seen KORN quite a few times over the years and this was by far the best performance I’ve ever seen the band give their fans!
