When Ozzy left Black Sabbath the band was in a bad place; the members were not getting along, the business had screwed them over, there was substance abuse, and personal relationships at home were falling apart.  While trying to pick up the pieces and restart Black Sabbath Iommi decided to audition Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio and the rest is history.  When Dio joined Sabbath it eased the workload on Geezer because during the Ozzy era of Sabbath Geezer had to write all of the lyrics; when Dio joined the fold he came in as a lyricist and wrote all of the songs he sang with Sabbath.

Bill Ward recorded drums on the “Heaven and Hell” record but flaked on the band after a month of touring and was replaced by Vinny Appice.  Ward claims that after Ozzy departed Sabbath that it was never the same for him and that led to heavy alcohol abuse and Ward leaving the band.  During the recording of “Heaven and Hell” Geezer was not present for most of the record.  Geezer tells how the title track “Heaven and Hell” is one of his favorite songs from the Dio era but he had no involvement with the writing because he left Sabbath for a bit to sort out his divorce and situate his life.  Geezer returned to Sabbath in time to record his parts for the record and to be a part of the tour.  Random factoid, Black Sabbath is owned solely by Ozzy and Iommi, Butler is a paid employee of Sabbath with no actual claim to the name.

“Heaven and Hell” sounds amazing, the remastering makes this record sound fresh and crisp.  The second disc is the highlight because it features a slew of rarities, b-sides, and rare live tracks.  “Heaven and Hell” is on this set four times and the liner notes tell the story of this era of the band perfectly.  Geezer stated on the Eddie Trunk show that Ozzy sang on an early version of “Children of the Sea” but Ozzy was unable to sing the song properly.

The “Mob Rules” set  features more bonus tracks than the “Heaven and Hell” set and this record displays what an amazing addition Dio truly was to Sabbath.

The “Mob Rules” set features the Portland 1982 show that has several Ozzy era Sabbath tunes sung by Dio.   “War Pigs”, “N.I.B.”, and “Children of The Grave” sung by Dio adds new life to these classic tracks and many fans have said they prefer Dio’s vocals on “N.I.B.” over Ozzy’s!

The liner notes detail how the band recorded "Mob Rules" in John Lennon's house and how they were star struck upon seeing hand written notes throughout the house from Lennon.  This was after Lennon was murdered and the band stated that you could feel Lennon's presence throughout the house.  This record would be the beginning of the end for the Dio era of Sabbath until the 1992 reunion "Dehumanizer" record.

Rhino did an amazing job with the packaging on both of these sets.  There are old newspaper clippings, old record covers, candid live shots, and brand new liner notes from all surviving members of the band.
