(Note:  The setlist posted on the stage was 100% NOT accurate and the band chose songs to play at random)

Los Angeles based alt-art rockers Starcrawler formed in 2015 when vocalist Arrow de Wilde met guitarist Henri Cash in California’s Grand Arts High School.

For those unaware of the awesomeness that IS Starcrawler here’s some of the bands obvious influences:  Iggy Pop, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Tammy Wynette, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Jack White, Hole, The Ramones, Ozzy Osbourne, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin.  Arrow and company blend styles that range from Country & Western to Hard Rock, Punk, and Delta Blues.

Starcrawler consists of Arrow de Wilde on vocals, Henri Cash on Guitar, Bill Cash (Henri’s Brother) pedal steel/guitar, Tim Franco on bass and drummer Seth Carolina.

Starcrawler's debut 7", "Ants" / "Used To Know", was released in 2017.

The band released their debut album simply titled “Starcrawler” via Rough Trade Records in January of 2018.  It was produced by Ryan Adams.

The band recorded a cover of The Ramones classic “Pet Sematary” for the revamped 2019 version of the motion picture.

The bands second full length record, “Devour You” was released in October of 2019.

Their latest release titled “She Said” came out on September 16, 2022 via Big Machine Records.

Arrow De Wilde is the child of photographer Autumn de Wilde and drummer Aaron Sperske.

Henri Cash’s Dad is LA blues guitarist Buddy Zapata and his aunt is famous guitar strap maker Jodi Head (www.jodihead.com).

Starcrawler have two very distinct things that set them apart from EVERY band out there.  The first is Henri Cash:  his guitar playing and quirky personallity are unmistakable.  His sound is unique because 1/2 of the bands songs are played on a guitar with only 3 strings.  The story as to why he uses a 3 string guitar is that his father gave him a cheap Epiphone Guitar to learn with as a child. Henri broke the 3 high strings and learned to play that way by tuning to open D. His father told him to move the 3 strings to the center so it wouldn't mess up the neck.

The second thing that makes Starcrawler TOTALLY unique is their 6’3”, rail thin, ultra androgynous leader/singer, Arrow de Wilde who looks like the bastard child of Iggy Pop, Cheri Currie (The Runaways), and Sebastian Bach (Skid Row).

The first time I saw Starcrawler they were opening for The Distillers at the 9:30 Club in DC on May 31, 2019.  The band lived up to their hype by delivering a strong, intense performance.  On November 10, 2022 the band returned to the area performing at The Metro Gallery in downtown Baltimore, MD.

Arrow commented onstage that this was the first time the band had ever performed in Baltimore, Maryland and that they quite liked it.

Teen Mortgage opened the show and they are a 2 man band that sounds like Queens of the Stone Age meets Royal Blood.  Their set sounded great but was plagued by technical issues which caused a few unexpected stops in their set.

Doors opened at 7:30 PM and Henri Cash was hanging out in the bar, checking his equipment, talking to fans, and signing autographs.  The crowd was small at first but by the time Starcrawler took the stage after 9 PM the room was filled to near capacity.

At the Starcrawler merch table fans could purchase a Starcrawler rosary bead necklace, candy, and shirts as well as vinyl were $30.

Opening with “Goodtime Girl”, the set had an interesting mix of high/low dynamics which saw the band performing several faster songs back to back, then several mellower tracks back to back.   This created a solid flow in the set and gave the band members a chance to jump around for a few songs then slow it down and be mellow for a few minutes.

Henri is a charismatic musician and his onstage energy is only rivaled by Arrow who owns the stage.  Henri’s playing is the core of the bands sound and what his brother play under his parts (lap steel & rhythm guitar) is subtle yet truly necessary to fill out the empty pieces in each song.

Tim (Bass) & Seth (drums) are an integral part of the music because what they do cements the entire foundation of what Starcrawler is.

Lead freak and onstage animal Arrow (vocals) is a lanky, ultra lean, unmistakably unapologetic, limber, intense, and menacing figure that dances about the stage while leading the band.  Arrow is a true rockstar in every sense of the word; her appearance, performance, and overall presence is un-ignorable.

Every member of Starcrawler truly brings their own vibe, attitude,  look, and feel to the live show.  All of the male members of the band, including their road crew, sported belt buckles which said their individual names.

A Rousing cover of “Pet Sematary” by The Ramones sounded amazing and “If You’re Gonna Be Dumb…” was a standout moment in the bands set.

Henri jumped offstage during “Bet My Brains” and played guitar in the crowd.  He would eventually give his guitar to a young boy and brought the boy onstage to finish the song.

It was also during “Bet My Brain” that Arrow jumped off stage and sang from the pit; she worked her way to the back of the venue where she disappeared for 30 minutes.  Arrow re-emerged with clean clothes and signed autographs/took photos with fans until the venue closed.

Baltimore was treated to an amazing 90 minute set from Starcrawler and hopefully the band will visit us again soon!
