The Bronx - Fillmore

Category: Live Reviews

Silver Spring, MD

THE BRONX Set List:  Unholy Hand, Sore Throat, Stranger Danger, Heart Attack American, Under The Rabbit, Side Effects, Two Birds, Knifeman, Six Days a Week, Around the Horn, History’s Stranglers

The Bronx were formed in 2002 and for those not in the know, The Bronx are 2 bands in one;  The Bronx are a hardcore/punk band while Mariachi El Bronx are their alter ego which is, as the name implies, a Mariachi band.  Lead Singer Matt Caughthran and guitarist Joby Ford are the core members of the band and have been there since day #1.

Second guitarist Ken Home adds extra traction to the bands guitar tone while bassist Brad Magers holds down the low end.  Newest addition to The Bronx, drummer Joey Castillo (Danzig, Eagles of Death Metal, Scott Weiland) is an intense player and his drumming resume is beyond impressive.

The Bronx were second to perform on this night with Thrice performing after them.  Matt and the boys brought a level of intensity like no other band at this show.

Joby is a slender man whose performance onstage is subtle yet and the point.  Laying down the guitar parts with fluid ease while Matt adds his screaming vocals like icing on the cake, this is what makes The Bronx overall sound.

The set list featured a random assortment of tracks with the bands 2 biggest hits, “White Guilt” and “Youth Wasted” surprisingly absent from the play list.

Matt jumped into the crowd several songs deep in the set and offered a hardcore small club experience to the mid sized venue.  The Bronx often perform at smaller venues and seeing them play on a larger stage was an interesting upgrade to what they do.  The 5 members of The Bronx rose to the challenge of bringing a big rock show to the stage and their aggressive nature was personified on the larger stage.
